Cinnamon apple cake: Tips & Tricks
Try as we might, our cakes often come out with a domed top. Don’t blame yourself, though. Blame science. This isn’t a huge issue in regular cakes, especially if they only have one layer, but it poses a bit of a problem in bundt cakes, since they’re flipped upside down, turning the top into the bottom.
To avoid this, dig a small trench in the middle of your apple cinnamon cake batter. When your batter rises, it’ll rise evenly thanks to this trick.
Choosing the Right Pan
Just as all cake recipes differ, so do bundt cake pans. You’re familiar with the classic mold, but there are now seemingly infinite variations on this beloved baking pan, and shape is important in baking. Choosing the right pan for your apple cinnamon cake is of utmost importance.
A quick Google images search will reveal the many options you have when choosing a bundt cake pan. They’re beautiful, but their unique shapes can complicate things a bit. Because this recipe uses fruit, use a classic mold, or something similar. Fruit can stick to the side of the pan, and the more crevices, the more chances for that to happen, which can ruin your cake.
It’s also wise to use a classic mold if you’re a beginner. But don’t be ashamed – classic bundt cakes are beautiful on their own, and there are several ways to spruce them up.
Decorating Tips
Again, bundt cakes are beautiful on their own thanks to the unique shape of the pans, but I certainly won’t blame you if you want to embellish your apple and cinnamon cake just a bit. I do it, too!
Before you decorate, and before you even take your cake out of the pan, let it cool entirely. Doing so will make it easier to remove from the pan. If you’re having trouble removing it even after it’s cooled, turn it upside down and let it fall out. Don’t worry – you floured the inside of the pan before baking, so it shouldn’t stick.
If it needs some extra help, pound the pan a bit with your hand. Once it’s removed, place it on the cooling rack and put something underneath (a cookie sheet, paper towels, a plate, etc.) to catch any rogue toppings.
- Powdered Sugar: For a simple, but elegant and classic look, dust powdered sugar or cinnamon atop your cinnamon apple cake. Use a crank handle sifter for precision, and you’ll be amazed at how beautiful your cake looks.
- Glaze: You can also take a simple glaze and drizzle it along the top and in the creases. It’s a simple way to elevate the looks and add another sweet flavor.
- Buttercream: If you’d rather, pipe some buttercream frosting in the creases, or slather it over the entire cake. Check out my easy chocolate buttercream recipe here for a pinch of inspiration!
- Vanilla Ice cream: While I do not necessarily consider vanilla ice cream a form of decorating this cake, it is most definitely a yummy pairing. If you’re not interested in ice cream, a dollop of whipped cream on top is also a wonderful delight!
No matter what decoration you choose, I know you will be pleased by the eye-catching result.
Best Apples for Apple Cinnamon Cake
Apple experts weigh in on this debate with four apple recommendations when making an apple cinnamon cake recipe: Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Fuji, and Gala. Let’s check them out:
- Granny Smith: The granny smith apple is my personal favorite. Whenever I use them, they seem to hold their shape well even after they’re cooked. I love the image of cutting into the cake and seeing those beautiful pieces dancing throughout the slice.
- Honeycrisp: Like the granny smith, honeycrisp apples offer a bright, tart flavor to make the flavor shine. They’re also in season throughout the winter, which makes them a great choice if you’re whipping this recipe up for a holiday event.
- Fuji: Fuji apples are another favorite of mine for this recipe, and many others. Differing from the granny smith and honeycrisp varieties, fuji apples deliver a sweeter note to the cake. They also store well, which means they’re a good option when other apples are out of season.
- Gala: Like the fuji apple, the gala apple is another option for providing a sweeter apple flavor to your bundt cake that can easily be found year-round.
What goes best with apple cinnamon cake?
When apple cinnamon cake is on the menu, I like to pair it with a light cheese. The apple cinnamon cake has such a bold flavor that anything too heavy will drown out other delicious flavors, and you certainly want to enjoy every bit of this amazing bundt cake. I like pairing apple cinnamon cake with either simple cream cheese or brie cheese.
If you’re feeling extra indulgent, apple cinnamon cake pairs wonderfully with brandy such as Calvados.
The one thing I do not recommend pairing apple cinnamon cake with is maple syrup! This combination sounds delicious on paper, but the sweetness of the maple syrup overpowers the delicate flavors in apple cinnamon cake. Stick with a light cheese or liquor to really let the apple flavor shine.
How To Store Apple Cinnamon Bundt Cake
While you may be surprised at how quickly this cake is gobbled up, there is still a chance of leftovers. If you need to store it, simply cover it in plastic wrap and leave it at room temperature. It should hold for approximately three to four days.
Can you freeze this apple cake?
Absolutely! You can store apple cake in the freezer for up to three months. When you’re ready, remove it from the freezer and let it thaw on your counter overnight. I recommend serving apple apple cake at room temperature, but it’s up to you.
What are you waiting for? Make some apple cinnamon cake today! I promise it won’t disappoint. And don’t forget the vanilla ice cream or whipped cream on top – yum!
