What is the Difference Between a Bundt Cake and a Regular Cake?
A Bundt cake is known for its distinct shape. This old-fashioned cake is typically made in a round pan with a large hole in the middle. And while the shape of a Bundt cake is much different than a traditional cake, that’s really the only difference between the two desserts.
The sponge and texture of a Bundt cake is essentially the same as a regular cake. In fact, most cake recipes can be made in a Bundt cake pan simply by increasing the bake time.
How Do You Keep a Bundt Cake from Sticking to the Pan?
Since most Bundt cake pans have a beautiful textured design in them, it can be easy for your cake to stick to those intricate lines and details. That’s why it’s a good idea to take a few extra steps to ensure that your donut Bundt cake doesn’t stick to the pan as it bakes. These simple tips will help keep your cake from sticking to the pan:
- Use a nonstick Bundt cake pan. The first thing you need to do to ensure your cake doesn’t stick is to make sure that you’re using a nonstick pan. Dark, coated Bundt pans are a great option for baking your cake. Or use a silicone pan to help prevent sticking.
- Grease the pan with cooking spray. While using butter to grease your cake pan is a common method for keeping cake from sticking to traditional cake pans, it can be difficult to get butter into all the nooks and crannies of a Bundt cake pan. That’s why it’s best to use nonstick cooking spray to thoroughly coat your Bundt pan before adding the cake batter.
- Dust the pan with flour. After greasing the pan, it’s also a good idea to give the pan a light dusting with flour. The flour will help prevent sticking and keep the cooking spray from caking up on top of your baked cake, which could cause the cake to become greasy. To prevent clumps of flour on top of your cake, place the flour in a fine mesh strainer and lightly dust the inside of the pan. Then, turn the pan over and lightly tap the side to release excess flour from the pan.
How to Remove a Bundt Cake from the Pan
Since you’ll be using a Bundt pan to prepare this donut cake, the process for removing it from the pan is slightly different than baking with a traditional cake pan. That’s because your cake will be baking upside down inside the pan. That means the cake needs to be flipped over after it’s finished cooking.
Removing a Bundt cake from the pan is a two-step process:
- Loosen the edges from the pan. Even if you’ve taken the steps listed above to prevent your cake from sticking to the pan, there will probably be some spots where the edges of the cake are still slightly stuck. Before you attempt to flip your Bundt cake over, take a minute to help loosen all the edges from the sides of the pan. Using a butter knife or flat spatula, carefully slide the end of the knife between the cake and the pan. Continue this method as you work your way around the pan.
- Flip the pan over onto a serving plate. After the cake has cooled and the pan is safe to touch, place your serving platter or cake plate on top of the cake pan. Holding both the sides of the pan and the sides of the plate between your thumb and forefinger, quickly flip the plate over so that the pan is resting on top of the plate upside down. Lightly tap around the bottom of the pan to help loosen the cake, then carefully pull the pan upward. If the cake is still stuck in the pan, continue lightly tapping until it pops out.
Once your blueberry donut cake has been removed from the pan, it will probably need to rest a few more minutes to finish cooling. Then, you can decorate your donut cake with glaze, slice and enjoy!
