What is a breakable chocolate heart?
For those of you who haven’t heard of them yet, breakable chocolate hearts are just heart-shaped chocolate casings, which can be filled with any surprises: small candy, marshmallows, jewelry, gift cards, toys, messages, flowers and many others that fit inside.
You need to smash the heart with a small hammer to reveal the treats inside. Waaay more fun than just regular cutting!
This Valentines day breakable heart is also a great craft to try with kids. Just make sure you always supervise them when working with the stove or other hot items. They can help with measuring the ingredients, microwave the chocolate (be careful to use bowls of silicone or other material that won’t get too hot), pouring the letters or drop the candies inside the heart.
Although there are some retailers already selling them, you might want to make your own and personalize it, just like I did. Cannot blame you: this heart will also carry the love you put into making it, so your Valentine will appreciate it a lot more, even though it may not be as pretty as the store-bought one, lol.
Some like to make this heart double-sided, while others will just make one chocolate heart and place it on top of a box or plate with cute shredded paper or other nice decor. I also loved how it looks that way, but it’s all up to you. If you decide you want a double-sided chocolate heart, just double the ingredients in my recipe and make two hearts instead of one.
Which chocolate to use for breakable chocolate hearts?
You want to make sure you are using real chocolate for tempering. Carefully check the ingredients to see what you’re buying: if it says cocoa butter, then it’s the real thing. Real chocolate will also melt at body temperature, while the compound has to be chewed. And you want it to melt in your mouth right away, don’t you?
You can also use compound chocolate for flexible molds and it will still hold, although it won’t have the same nice snap. Better keep it for baking, where it doesn’t need to look nice and shiny.
It’s super important to temper the chocolate so that it is firm and tasty, has a nice shine and snaps beautifully when you break it. Chocolate that was not correctly tempered will not hold its shape, nor release from the mold. To achieve this, the chocolate should not get hotter than 90ºF.
If you happen to over-heat your chocolate, you can always temper it back through the seeding method. First, melt 2/3 of your chocolate and keep the rest for later. Also, keep aside some finely chopped tempered chocolate.
How do you temper chocolate?
- Heat the chocolate over a double boiler until it reaches between 110ºF – 120ºF (43ºC – 48ºC), stirring constantly. Make sure no water accidentally gets into the chocolate or it will spoil it;
- Remove from heat and begin adding some of the chopped chocolate you reserved to cool it down. Stir to melt the solid chocolate and keep the temperature constant. You can also transfer it to another, cooler bowl, to make the process faster. Get the chocolate to 100ºF;
- At 96-98ºF, add more of the chopped tempered chocolate and stir to cool it to 95ºF;
- Keep stirring until the chocolate reaches 79ºF;
- Warm the chocolate again very carefully, until reaching 86ºF-90ºF, so that you can easily work it in your mold.
Tips and tricks:
- You can also use compound chocolate for flexible molds and it will still hold, although it won’t have the same nice snap;
- Some people prefer adding almond bark or candy melts to temper back the chocolate, but this may affect the taste, so I stick to real chocolate for this;
- Make sure the coating is distributed evenly on the inside of the mold. Thin spots can break or create holes in the heart;
- Make mini breakable chocolate hearts by using small heart-shaped silicone baking molds. Fill them with smaller items and offer a whole set of chocolate hearts. Use them also as cute edible party favors (for example at weddings or baby showers);
- Decorate with anything you can think of: sprinkles, edible glitter spray, sugar flowers, more chocolate, just use your imagination;
- Use any leftover chocolate to make smaller candies or dip pretzels, cookies, fruits, anything you like;
- Don’t forget to include the cute wooden mallet for the most fun part: smashing the heart open.

How to make Valentine’s day breakable heart?
- Separate each color chocolate in microwave safe bowls.
- Cook the chocolate for the heart, for 30 second increments in the microwave, stirring each time. Pour into your heart mold. Distribute evenly, making sure to get the sides. Allow to cool and harden.
- Cook your white chocolate for the letters for 30 second increments in the microwave, stirring each time. Choose what you want to say and place your chocolate in those letter molds. Allow to cool and harden.
- Carefully peel your heart mold away from the chocolate.
- Cook your chocolate for the drizzle for 30 second increments in the microwave, stirring each time. Using a whisk or spoon, drizzle over the corner of the heart. If using any decorations such as sprinkles, add immediately before the chocolate drizzle dries.
- Remove your letters from their mold, and place on the heart. You can place them on or use melted chocolate on the backside of the letters for adhesive on the heart.
- Place anything under your heart such as candy, jewelry, toys for the kids, and more! Use the hammer to break open!
As I said earlier: don’t just think of this chocolate heart as a Valentine gift. Make it for a birthday, gender reveal (hide the gender-specific color inside to make it a surprise), proposal, bachelorette or other theme party, or any event in the life of a loved one.
Please share your ideas of how you managed to personalize your breakable chocolate hearts in the comments! I’m so curious how they turned out.
