This delicious Bahama Mama smoothie (or slush) is a fun take on a popular drink. And since you can make it as a cocktail or a mocktail, itβs a great drink option for everyone in the family!
Bahama Mama is a classic cocktail thatβs perfect for the summer months. But why enjoy a plain cocktail when you could take the chill up a notch and turn it into a slush?
How to Make Bahama Mama smoothie
Ingredients you need
A traditional Bahama Mama is usually made with pineapple juice, orange juice, white rum, coconut rum, and grenadine. To make this fruity cocktail, simply combine the juices and rum together, then pour the grenadine on top to create a layered effect.
While a classic Bahama Mama is typically served over ice, you can easily turn this juice-based drink into a slush by mixing the ingredients with ice in a blender before serving.
A virgin Bahama Mama cocktail gets its classic flavor from the combination of pineapple juice, orange juice, and coconut rum. Since you canβt get the full flavor of this tropical drink without adding that coconut flavored liqueur, you need to find a nonalcoholic solution to replace that essential element of the cocktail.
There are a few different options you can use to create your own Bahama Mama drink. My favorite ingredients are:
- Coconut water
- Coconut extract
While coconut water is a great way to add the liquid element of the rum to the drink in place of plain water, it doesnβt really add the amount of coconut flavor you need to replicate the flavor of coconut rum. Thatβs why itβs a good idea to mix in some coconut extract into the drink along with the coconut water. The combination of those two ingredients is the perfect nonalcoholic replacement in your Bahama Mama mocktail recipe.
Instructions to prepare the Bahama Mama Smoothie
The best part about this drink recipe is that itβs a slush! Itβs the perfect way to cool off on a hot summer day. But if youβve ever tried to turn a traditional cocktail into a slush, you might know that the process is sometimes easier said than done. Try these simple tips for creating the perfect Bahama Mama slush:
- Use frozen juice. One big reason many drinks donβt work well as slushes is because thereβs too much liquid in the cocktail recipe. Adding ice only dilutes the drink, which makes it taste watered down. With the help of frozen juice, you have less liquid in your drink, allowing the full flavor of all the ingredients to come out. Just keep in mind that when you use frozen concentrated juice, you do need to add some liquid to the mix to balance out the flavors. In this recipe, the coconut water helps thin the frozen juices out without diluting the overall flavor of the drink.
- Blend, then add ice. Another issue you may face when creating a frozen drink is that the ingredients separate from the ice after everything is blended. To keep this from happening, itβs a good idea to blend the drink ingredients together first, then add the ice. This ensures that all your ingredients get properly mixed. Plus this method allows you to limit the amount of ice you add, which keeps you from diluting the drink too much.
- Add ice one cup at a time. To avoid putting too much ice in your frozen drink, itβs best to start small. Scoop one cup of ice into the blender at a time. This will allow you to gauge the consistency of the drink as youβre blending. This method will help you determine exactly how much ice you need without the possibility of over-icing your slush.
Slush Garnish Ideas
Part of the fun of making cocktails and mocktails is decorating the glass! And that means youβll need to have plenty of delicious garnishes on hand to dress up your slush after itβs blended. Try these garnish ideas to create a beautiful drink to enjoy this summer:
- Orange slices. Enhance the orange flavor of your drink by adding a fresh orange slice or wedge to the edge of the glass.
- Orange peel. Get a little bit fancier with your garnish and add to the orange flavor of your drink by dressing up the cocktail with a curled orange peel.
- Cherry. You canβt go wrong by adding a maraschino cherry to the top of your drink! It adds to the look and flavor by bringing out the cherry flavor of the grenadine.
- Pineapple wedge. This drink features pineapple juice so it makes sense to add a wedge of fresh pineapple to the rim of the glass. But if you donβt have fresh pineapple, try topping your glass with a pineapple chunk instead.
- Cocktail umbrella. Not all garnishes need to be edible! Give your drink a tropical feel with the help of a colorful cocktail umbrella.
