How Do You Make Simple Syrup?
Whether you’re hoping to add sweetness to a cocktail or your coffee, lavender syrup is a great option. And since there are so many different flavors you can add to plain syrup, the possibilities are endless once you learn this easy recipe!
To make your own homemade simple syrup, just follow these four quick steps:
- Combine water, sugar, and flavoring in a saucepan. The key ingredients to simple syrup are water and sugar. In addition to those two ingredients, you can also add flavoring, like lavender, to the pan to enhance the taste.
- Bring the mixture to a boil. After stirring the three ingredients in your simple syrup together in the saucepan, cook them over medium heat. Make sure to stir everything continuously to keep the sugar from burning as it heats up. Continue to simmer and stir until the water begins to boil and the sugar has dissolved.
- Cool the syrup. Once the mixture comes to a boil, remove the pan from the heat source and allow the syrup to sit for around five minutes. As the syrup rests, the flavors will meld and the syrup will begin to thicken.
- Strain the syrup (optional). While not all syrup flavors will need to be strained, if you’re using larger flavoring ingredients like lavender, you will need to use a mesh strainer to remove the lavender petals before using the syrup. Simply pour the syrup through a fine mesh strainer to catch all the small bits of flavoring.
Why is my lavender syrup bitter?
If your lavender syrup has a bitter taste, it’s likely because the lavender flowers were not fresh. Always make sure to use fresh or dried lavender that has been stored in a cool, dark place. If the lavender is old or has been exposed to light or heat, it will likely be bitter. You can also try boiling the syrup for a few minutes longer to help dissipate any bitter flavors.
How long does homemade lavender syrup last?
After preparing your syrup, it’s important that you store it properly so it lasts! Start by allowing the syrup to cool completely. After that, transfer it to a bottle or jar with an airtight lid. When stored properly in the refrigerator, the syrup will stay fresh for up to two weeks.
In addition to refrigerating your syrup, you can also keep the syrup in the freezer for more long-term storage. Transfer the extra syrup to an airtight container or jar. Make sure to leave space in the container for expansion as the syrup freezes.
You can keep your syrup in the freezer for up to three months. To use it, simply transfer the container to the refrigerator to thaw.
